Sales Letters Are the Key to Direct Marketing Success

by Joshua Black

If you are in the direct marketing business or you are thinking about starting in it, you need to start studying copywriting and learn how to write a sales letter. These letters are the best way to multiply your selling efforts in print. All you have to do is write a letter on time and mail it over and over as the money pours in. Read on to find out how you can incorporate solid copywriting in your sales letters.

As a direct marketer you are essentially holding a conversation with your customers from a long distance away. You need to evoke all of the emotions and feelings of a person-to-person meeting, but you have to do it with words. This is no easy task and many small business owners have failed miserably at it. So, let's get you in a position where you can create a very strong sales letter in the shortest amount of tim possible.

Here are 5 things that you should consider when creating your next marketing piece:

1. Write a headline that doesn't give away your whole offer, it just needs to grab the customer and keep them reading the next line of the letter.

2. Tell a story in your body copy. People remember compelling stories much more vividly and much longer than they will if you just give them a list of bullets. Stories are the way we share information with each other and if you tell them right, they can stick in a person's mind for years after one reading. Just look at the power of some urban legends. They are compelling and get passed from person to person with only a slight change in details.

3. Talk to one person at a time. As I said before, your sales letter is a one-on-one conversation between you and your prospect. You need to make it sound personal, as if you are talking to them over lunch.

4. Use a voice as if you are talking to a friend. Write in the language that the customer uses every day. If you write with a bunch of hype and technical jargon, the prospect will be immediately on guard and will probably stop reading.

5. Use a strong guarantee. You have to have one anyway, so why not use it as a marketing tool to ease the skepticism of the prospect. You want to take away any fear of the purchase and pre-remove any buyers remorse that could occur after the sale.
