Better Your Life and Become a Better Writer - Book Review
by Lance Winslow
It seems these days everyone wants to become a writer, this interests me because I really don't. In fact, I wonder why anyone would want to become a writer because it is such a slow means of communication. And the reality that so many folks write for free online. Nevertheless, it is the way that we put forth ideas and concepts, so it is a great skill to have.
Of course, if you decide to become a writer, I hope you go for it. And if so, I'd like to recommend a very good book to you, one that I have in my "writing library" and one that I believe you should have too if you wish to write a novel, a nonfiction book, articles, or even research papers. The name of the book is;
"Secrets of Successful Writing; inside Tips from a Writing Expert," by Dewitt H. Scott, and 1989
Mr. Scott, the author, first reminds all writers that readers are not as stupid as you think they are, and he wants you to assume that they are intelligent, not assume they are stupid, otherwise you end up talking down to them, the reader senses this, and they think you, the writer is thus; stupid. He makes a very good point and that is one of the main topics of the first chapter.
The author also wants you to throw away the typical advice, and create your own style, as he also makes points about; the length of sentences, the importance of brevity, and how to make tricky sentences using wordplays, all of which I just violated in this sentence. He likes to quote other famous authors throughout the book, and perhaps, you'll like this one quote by Mark Twain; "when in doubt strike it out."
He spends nearly a whole chapter on explaining how to use adjectives correctly, and how they can turn your writing into excitement for the reader. Anyway, I highly recommend this book. Please consider all this.
