Worried About Your Bridesmaid Speech? Bridesmaid Speeches Can Be Fun and Easy!

Bridesmaid speeches are one of our most important wedding traditions. Bridesmaid speeches are also typically brief, but that doesn't prevent the good ones from creating lifelong memories. That sure sounds like a lot of pressure, but the good news is that it doesn't need to be difficult. Here are some rules for creating and delivering bridesmaid speeches that should make the process a lot simpler.
What do I put into my bridesmaid speech?
• Whatever your speech is about, keep it short. The rule of thumb is three minutes.
• Make sure to thank the bride for the honor of selecting you.
• Express your relationship with the bride to the audience. Popular ways to do this include telling a story, singing a song, or reciting a poem you wrote for the occasion.
• Never include anything that would embarrass the bride.
• Never include anything that would alienate anyone in the audience (sex, religion, politics).
• There should be at least one toast, and typically, the bridesmaid will direct this at the bride and groom. It's all right to have one for each and then one for the couple.
• Additional toasts can be appropriate, but only add them to the speech with purpose.
How do I deliver my bridesmaid toast?
• Don't dwell on being nervous. Everyone who has ever given a maid of honor speech has felt the same way and experienced the same anxieties.
• Actively engage the audience by standing upright, making eye contact, and projecting your voice.
• If you're extremely nervous, start by making eye contact with someone with whom you are close.
• It's fine to have notes on hand, but do not read from them directly.
• Keep the speech positive. It's OK to talk about a topic of substance but avoid being heavy.
• Mention the importance of ceremony as a lead in to the conclusion. A great way to do this is by reciting a famous poem or quote concerning the wedding ceremony.
• Conclude it with a toast. If you give multiple toasts, save the funniest and most lighthearted for last.
